December 2003

Dear Friends of Builders Without Borders,

I am honored to take over the helm here at BWB from Joseph Kennedy, our former Director, who has decided to focus on his EcoHomestead project in South Africa and his program at New College, in Santa Rosa, California.

This past year has been an exciting adventure, filled with rapid growth and development of new projects. BWB now has projects taking off in eight countries - Mexico, Turkey, Afghanistan, Haiti, Africa, Israel, Russia and the U.S. (primarily on the Navajo Nation). You can read more about these projects on our What’s New webpage.

BWB has three new books nearing completion. Building Without Borders: Sustainable Construction for the Global Village, by Joseph Kennedy, is due out in February, 2004 by New Society Publishers. We also have two straw-bale construction guides due out next month. One is the first straw-bale training curriculum, created specifically for facilitators. The second is a picture-driven training guide for workshop participants. Both guides are by Katia LeMone, a professional curriculum developer, and myself, Dr. Owen Geiger, a licensed contractor and engineer who is keenly interested in seeing straw-bale construction (as well as other natural building methods) spread on an international scale.

BWB has also received a fair amount of publicity this past year. Articles have appeared in the LA Times Syndicate, Architecture magazine, Desert Exposure, and Natural Home magazine, to name a few. Jazz for Peace held a benefit concert for BWB in New York City in October. And Dr. Tom Rogers is on his way to Hiroshima, Japan to represent BWB at an upcoming United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) conference.

We have accomplished much in the past three and a half years, but we need your support to continue doing good work in the future. Please consider a tax-deductible donation to become a member of Builders Without Borders in one of the following categories:

$25 Contributor
$50 Donor
$75 Sponsor
$100 Business/Partner
$500 or more, Angel

Our single greatest need is financial support. We are grateful for all of the support from our members and contributors which allows Builders Without Border's work to continue.

Please make checks payable to Builders Without Borders and mail to 119 Main Street, Kingston, New Mexico, 88042.

If you’d like to make a credit card donation, please call 505-895-5400, or if you have questions, please email me at mail@BuildersWithoutBorders.org.

Sincerely,
